Pride in WBHS

At Wynberg Boys’ High School we understand that the experience boys receive at school will determine the men they are capable of becoming. We believe that a through and well-rounded education is paramount in providing all learners with the foundations they will build upon for the remainder of their lives. This is why we place importance on all four pillars of Wynberg excellence, academic, sport, service and culture. Life at Wynberg Boys’ High School is rich, varied, exciting, and enormously rewarding.

A word from the Headmaster

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Wynberg Boys’ High School, one of the oldest and most prestigious traditional boys’ schools in the country. Rich in tradition, but passionate about progress, Wynberg is a school of incredible opportunities both in our classrooms and in our extra-mural curricula.

Our dynamic and committed staff continue to grow and keep abreast of the latest trends in education, working closely with local and international universities, to ensure we produce learners able to take their place proudly in society and add meaningful contributions to the world at large.

One of Wynberg’s defining features is our pastoral care and discipline structure. Through our Tutor system, the well-being of our boys remains paramount. Our discipline structure based on The Wynberg Way, bought into and understood by boys and staff alike, consistently delivers outstanding holistic results in producing well-balanced Wynberg Men.

Wynberg Boys’ High School celebrates diversity, embracing and respecting the differences that bring us all together in a healthy community inspired by opportunities to achieve excellence in all spheres of school life, be it academics, sport, culture, or service.

Mr Jan de Waal

Headmaster, Wynberg Boys’ High School

History & Philosophy

On the 1st July 1841, John McNaughton opened the doors of his new school, the ‘Established School at Wynberg’ in Glebe Cottage. Newly arrived from Scotland, he found himself teaching in a single room with 65 pupils – none of whom could read and write! In terms of the Government policy of the day, it was specifically laid down that there was to be no prejudice in terms of colour, creed or gender. It was also reported that the young Headmaster soon made a name for himself insisting on good grooming.

Wynberg Boys’ High School is a traditional, values-based boys’ school where we mentor young men by providing a wide range of educational opportunities in a stimulating, innovative and challenging environment.
